Didn't want to go with a cliched title like "I am...Iron man!" or something, so you can imagine it yourself. In any case though, I saw the new Iron Man movie last night with my friends.
In a word...awesome.
I would have to say that this is my favorite super hero movie of all time, my close second being Batman Begins. Pretty much everything about Iron Man was perfect.
In particular, I can't say enough good things about Robert Downey Jr who is Tony Stark. I made a comment as I was coming out of the theater that if Robert Downey Jr. dies, Tony Stark needs to die too because there's nobody in existance and probably won't be then that can play him as well as he was played in this movie. Robert might as well just change his name to Tony Stark.
I'd recommend this movie to anybody who's looking for a good action flick. Even if you don't like superhero movies, I think you might enjoy this one.
Other events last night involved me headed out to the bookstore to browse their selection of piano/keyboard instructional books (for learning how to play my keyboard that arrived Wednesday night). I picked up one that I think I'm going to try out to see if I can work through it on my own. As I mentioned previously, I don't really want to spring for lessons or anything at this point. We'll see how far I can get on my own. I'm more inclined to learn on my own anyway.
Stay tuned for a harrowing tale about a trip Wassy and I made across a crumbling bridge on our weekly walk this Wednesday. I'll probably type that up tomorrow as I need to swing by and take some pictures to illustrate the immense danger we were in.
As I mentioned last time, I went out to Rochetser with my friends this weekend to the IMAX theater (or as my parents GPS unit says the im-ex (im as in imperial) ) to see Beowulf in IMAX 3D.
The movie was decent in the sense that I don't regret the 2.5 hour trip out to see it. It's an entirely animated move with some really impressive animation. There were points where I forgot the movie was animated. A few rough spots here and there popped that belief, but overall it was excelent from the special effects front.
The pacing however, could have been better. There were a few points where it seemed to drag. And after some dinner conversation (we went out to dinner at Bugaboo Creek, or as the GPS likes to say it, Beegaboo Creek) I can't help but wonder if the entire movie was made just so that they could create a lifelike, totally naked (minus the naughty bits, PG-13 and all) 3d model of Angelina Jolie. The character she plays, by the way, seemed to have the best animations. Hmmm... Anyway, you need to get past a whole lot of not entirely fully clothed men to get to that point in the movie so, be prepared!
Anyway, if I were to see the movie in anything but IMAX 3D, I'd probably be disappointed. If you don't have an IMAX hanging around and they're showing it in 3D near you that's a decent substitute. I definitely wouldn't go see it without the 3d-ness though. It would lose some of it's epic-ness. Overall, the movie was fun and if you're looking for something to do I'd recommend it, but it's definitely not a must see in my book.
I went out to Syracuse with my friends yesterday to catch a showing of The Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D. It was my first actual 3D movie and apparently I looked very interesting with the 3D glasses over the top of my actual glasses. Bah! The movie itself was really good. The 3D aspect of it was pretty impressive and it was nice seeing that movie on the big screen in an actual theater where the kids were actually fairly well behaved. Amazing! It's definitely holiday movie season though...let the trailers for horrible Christmas themed movies begin!
After the show we went out to dinner and then back to their place to watch some more Resident Evil playing. As a side effect of this, I now really want to buy a Playstation Portable due to the fact there's a lot of cool RPG type games coming out for it (or things that have already come out, like the Final Fantasy Tactics remake).
It's this time of year where I really hate being a gamer. Everybody dumps all of their cool releases on us at once. It's not very fair.
In other news, apparently there was a guy recording the Porcupine Tree show that we went to earlier in the week. It's a really, really awesome sounding bootleg, probably the best I've heard that wasn't directly recorded from the soundboard. Of course I downloaded it immediately. It's a nice thing to remember my first Porcupine Tree show with.
An eventful weekend so far for me. I went to see Ratatouille Saturday afternoon with Wassy and Jay. It was a pretty good movie. Not Pixars best effort, but it was solid. The animation was spectacular, especially the water. They just keep getting better and better over there.
After the movie, we went out to Zebbs for dinner and then back to their place to watch some more Anime. She's got me watching Neon Genesis Evangelion which I'm enjoying quite a bit.
Earlier today I watched The Iron Giant which ended up being awesome. I really wish I would have seen that
movie sooner. And if you haven't then go see it!
The rest of my time this weekend has been spent doing Astronomy homework that I should have been doing over the past 4-5 weeks. Procrastination isn't fun. I'm almost done with it all now, I just need to finish a couple of research papers and I'm set. I'm taking a break right now, due to the fact I'm entirely drained and can't write another informative sentence. Ughhh...
Yesterday was busy. Wassy wanted to get out of the house and Jay was at work, so she came over to my place for part of the morning/afternoon to do some more music-related stuff.. We also went mini-golfing (which I won, thanks to several hole-in-one's at the very beginning) and thankfully beat out the rain which showed up during the afternoon. Unfortunately, the rain presented a slight problem for our later plans.
We were planning on meeting up with Jay when he got out of work and go to the movies to see Ratatouille, figuring it wouldn't be super crowded due to people enjoying some Independence Day activities. Then it had to go and rain. The movies were packed and showing we wanted to see was completely sold out. So we scratched that plan and went back to my place for a while and then out to dinner at Outback. Mmm...Bloomin Onion.
Dinner had an especially funny moment where when asked what he felt about having desert, an extremely tired Jay (having not heard the question apparently) looked at his watch and replied "7:35". That was the popular running joke for the rest of the evening, and why it's the title of this post. We ended up not going for desert, for the record.
It's entirely too hot out right now. Yesterday it got up to something like 92F and humid. I didn't want to cook anything for dinner in my apartment (it was already 80ish in there when I got home from work) so I managed to tag along with my parents to go out to eat.
Then I got back home and it was 83 and the temperature wouldn't go down at all. So as of the time I left this morning, it was 78F and rising indoors.
Luckily I have class tonight so I don't have to stay there long.
Not wanting to do anything that involved, well, moving, I dug into my accumulating stack of Netflix movies and pulled out My Cousin Vinny which was a recommendation from my friends. Pretty funny. However, every time I saw Joe Pesci on the screen, the only thing I could think of was his misguided singing career since last week I saw something on VH1 about awesomely bad career moves. Why Joe? Why?!?
On sunday I went out to the "local" IMAX theater (The phrase local meaning 2.5 hour drive in this context) with some friends to see Spiderman 3 on the big big screen.
Eh. It was all right. It could have had at least 30 minutes cut out from it and it would have been a better movie. It just seemed like they tried to do way too much.
Dinner however, was good. We went to Bugaboo Creek and, mmm...BBQ Chicken Nachos are good. Very good. Oh, and I had trout too, which was a new item for me. I'd definitely go back there.
Hmm...I thought I'd have more to say about the subject, but well, I'm drawing a blank without discussing the movie too much since I'm trying to avoid posting spoilers quite so early. So...I'm done then.
Signing into my Netflix account last night, I noticed a new little tab on the menu bar: "Watch Now"
"Woohoo" I said, as I've been waiting to try out Netflix's streaming service since it was announced. I switched over to my Windows box, fired up Internet Explorer and got started.
For some reason, it's auto-detecting my speed to be in the "basic" category, even though I have a 10mbps connection. Hopefully that changes if netflix gets faster servers or whatever, because I should be getting better quality movies than this.
I watched Dragonheart last night, which is one of my favorite movies from when I was younger. The quality wasn't bad. Wasn't great either, but it was watchable. I can't see myself watching special effects type movies on it, considering there's no 5.1 sound, but it could be useful if I get the urge to watch something right away that I don't want to put in the queue and wait for.
Hopefully their selection of TV shows improves too. I can see myself using it more for that than movies.
Overall, a decent experience, but the DVD isn't dead yet.
I got my most recent DVD from Netflix today. Scored the Fantastic Four movie which I didn't see in theaters when it came out. It was decent...I was expecting a lot worse. But that's not the important part.
I put the DVD in and start playing it and the first thing that pops up is an ad. It's not just any ad though. It's one of those commercials about how downloading movies is illegal and bad and you should never do it ever. Think about this for a second. A commercial about illegal movie downloading...on a DVD. One would assume if you're watching the DVD that you didn't download it illegally! Just a hunch and all.
I think the MPAA is marketing to the wrong people.
If you could watch any movie on the big screen right at this moment, what would it be?
Serenity. I missed out on the whole Firefly thing when it was on TV and when the movie came out and only recently discovered this little gem of a series/movie. Now I wish I had known about it sooner and had the ability to go back and watch it in the theater when it first came out.
Another one would be Star Wars...the original. That movie just isn't the same unless you're watching it in a theater on a big screen.
